It would seem that snowboarding has become more and more popular by the year, thanks in large part to its association with hip, youth style and culture. Notwithstanding, many people that want to pick the sport up are completely unaware of the reality that snowboarding is an activity which places major physical demands on the body and that isn't apt for just anybody to perform. Hence, it's important for a person to be in good physical shape to actually enjoy themselves on the mountain, without even speaking of preventing any injuries!
That?s right: if you are not careful, your otherwise enjoyable snowboarding trip could be turned into a complete nightmare! So before you snap on the boots and the board, make sure that you are up to the challenge and are in good enough condition to handle this sport, avoiding injury to yourself and to others (common with first-time boarders).
To being with, you shouldn't even be thinking about putting together a snowboarding trip if you are not in somewhat decent physical condition. It's not necessary for you to be at the Olympic level of competition, but in the case that you have doubts regarding the shape you're in then at least be modest and careful on the trails. Make constant stops and keep yourself to the beginner's trails, and avoid fatiguing yourself until you are ready to throw the towel in for the day. Though it may seem strange, many first times to the sport only discover how exhausted they are when they are on the verge of causing some sort of incident or accident on the trail.
Additionally, don't outdo yourself and try hitting the expert trails when you are still a newbie. If this is going to be your first time on a snowboard, then don't even think about trying out those crazy stunts that you saw on the X-Games or elsewhere. Steer clear of icy patches as well as the very compacted snow and especially the moguls, as all of these require a high level of skill to manage.
Furthermore, make sure that you are in the right state of mind and clear headed before going out onto the trails all geared up. There is absolutely no room for going out to the lifts with a hangover or worse, still drunk! It ought to go without saying that this applies to all medications and drugs that you may be under the influence of, which may alter your physical performance and judgment on the trails.
A major cause for concern while snowboarding is the incredible rate of acceleration and the speeds which can be achieved in very short distance/time. Contrary to skiing, in which riders can easily execute the "wedge" position to decrease their speed rapidly, it can be quite challenging to slow down or prevent excessive acceleration on a snowboard. Therefore, for new riders, it's crucial to keep on low-grade slopes for starters and to swerve frequently.
Protective gear is an important aspect of safe snowboarding, both in terms of lessening the risk of injury from a fall or collision and keeping the cold and wet at bay. Padded clothing, goggles and waterproof clothing are all important features of the snowboarding gear lineup, and local resort operators may offer additional materials.
Finally, be sure to take the right attitude out onto the slopes and be mindful of other people out there enjoying the snow and the fun. Be aware of your limitations and always expect the worst (just as when driving) of what those beside you may do as a safety precaution. That way, you ought to be able to avoid any kind of injury or problem and enjoy your day out snowboarding to the fullest!

Through the lens of analyzing whitewater rafting on the South Fork of the American River in Northern California, we'll explore some ways to pick an outfitter. These concepts may be applied whether you're hiking, snorkeling, skiing or para-sailing, etc. Specifically we're going to look at outfitters and their size, how many trips do they do and what's right for you.
There are benefits to small outfitters you won't generally find in the larger providers on the river. The counterpoint to this, there are benefits the larger outfitter can provide the smaller outfitter just cannot compete.
We're not choosing for you, large or small, this is your decision to make; however, in doing so, just ask yourself some simple questions about the trip you want to have. The points below may be of assistance in developing your perfect rafting getaway.
Before we begin the compare and contrast, by in large, if you're rafting with a professional company then you can expect a competent, organized trip.
As a reference point, a small company is going to raft less than 1200 people a year down the river and a large company will do more than 1200.
To understand what this means on a "river-scale", in 2008 more than 60,000 people went down the American River's South Fork. The largest of companies ran more than 6,000 of those people and the smallest did near 200. The rest were divvied up between the other 31 outfitters.
One of the biggest differences in a large versus small company is trip availability. A large company, because they're generally running a trip, can almost always take a one, two or four person booking. Whereas a small company may not be able to book you into a trip that's already going. The costs are prohibitive. This doesn't mean you shouldn't try to reserve with a smaller company, it simply means sometimes they cannot run the trip The flip side here, some of the larger companies fill up and their permits will not allow more bookings and a smaller company may have room on a trip.
The energy may be a bit more laid back at a smaller company simply because they have less to keep track of. A larger company has a whole host of schedules to meet and logistics to keep organized and this may limit their ability to add special requests to a trip, limit their ability to customize your experience; whereas, a small company may easily accommodate your requests.
While not a significant factor when choosing an outfitter but equipment should be given a thought or two. Larger outfitters, who are rafting large numbers are going to have equipment to handle large numbers. For rafting this means bigger rafts, bigger than a small outfit designed specifically for customer enjoyment. Bigger rafts are fine, you'll have fun but they're not as exciting as a company that has gear aimed specifically at making the river the best ride it can be.
Rates: For some, it all boils down to money. In 2008, a group asked for pricing from their regular rafting outfitter, a smaller company. The pricing was for 2 days rafting, 2 lunches, dinner, breakfast and camping. The small companies bid was $250, per person. They shopped their outfitter and found a larger outfitter who charged $199, without considering the differences in experience, they chose the larger company. Most of the pricing you'll find will be similar, even the $50 spread in this example is over 2-days, the fee splits are nominal. If, as in the example, the bigger company wants to go lower, they can, and the smaller companies cannot follow due to fixed costs.
If you have additional plans built into your vacation you may have requests of the outfitter you choose to meet the time requirements of what you're doing. A larger outfitter may not be able to meet your needs because of the schedules mentioned above or the person in charge is not authorized to make the necessary decision to make your special request happen. A smaller outfitter has a higher likelihood of the decision maker being at or near the river to make those decisions and to help you plan your trip. A larger company may better be able to handle very large groups, 100+ people or perhaps they run other rivers you're interested in. Again, both have their benefits you simply need to decide what you need and how you need it and then begin your contact.
Finally, customer service may be an issue. Most smaller companies have the boss close at hand. This person is often the owner and your pleasure, your positive experience with his or her outfit is of paramount importance and this may show in little touches or courtesies extended to you from the booking encounter to the final wave good bye. All companies will have positive competent staff working to make you happy, but some of the bigger companies can get distracted.
Size does matter, when choosing your rafting provider.

Are you stuck on trying to figure out how to spend your summer vacation without draining the bank. Summer is coming and in this tough economy we are all trying to save a buck or two. Family camping is a great way to enjoy your summer vacation without spending a lot of money.
Not only are there tents that are large enough to fit an entire family, but these tents cost less than even one night in a nice hotel. For that price you can get your room on the go to take with you on trips over and over again. You'll be able to enjoy many camping trips throughout the years and throughout the future for a great, cheap price.
Don't worry about finding things to do on your trip. There's no shortage of activities that you can take part in while camping. Go fishing or watch the wildlife, take a long hike or just relax in the peace and quiet of it all.
No matter what your preferred activity is, you'll be making an impression with a fantastic trip. You, your family and your kids will always remember the fun and great times you had together on those camping trips. Camping provides family bonding and will build memories that will last your entire life, and it doesn't get better than that.
Camping also provides many other benefits and opportunities. It's a great escape from everyday life, traffic, congestion and everything else. You'll be able to really take in a serene environment while getting some time to decompress and recharge.
Take the opportunity this summer and get out and enjoy Mother Nature. Get away from the television, video games and even the telephone. Start a new family tradition that is inexpensive and fun that the whole family can enjoy.
Taking that first camping trip together can start a new family tradition that will last for years. Camping is a classic American hobby and pastime that not everyone from around the world is lucky enough to take part in.
It does not matter where you live in America, you can always find great places to go camping. You can go camping in your back yard or 4 hours away at your favorite campground. Your imagination and attitude are the key ingredients to enjoy the simple things this summer.

As Spring Break ends most of us begin looking towards the next big break from our daily routine. This means summer and summer vacations.
If you cant plan that dream getaway this year, worry not, for there are many fun and mind freeing getaways right here in our own backyards.
Isnt it always so that we forget how incredible the place we live? To remember can remind us not to take for granted those who support and love us; too often, we can take them for granted as well.
From the oldest standing redwood grove, to massive ports of call, to one of the deepest lakes in the world, some of the best rivers to be rafted and surf to be rip-curled, California is as good as it gets and tens of thousands of people flock to its land yearly.
Here are just some of the things you can do in and around the historic county of El Dorado, in Northern California
The American River Valley in Lotus / Coloma is where it all started with the Gold Rush, and so shall we.
El Dorado County is host to the American River Valley and Coloma, it's only 2-hours from the San Francisco Bay Area, 1-hour from South Lake Tahoe and thus has some excellent vacation choices. This is a good choice for a cost friendly break from the daily grind and one that offers a bounty of vacation options. Within a reasonable drive from anywhere in the State, this is a solid option rich in US history as well.
The History:
From the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park website - James W. Marshall discovered gold in 1848 on the South Fork of the American River in the valley the Nisenan Indians knew as Cullumah. This event led to the greatest mass movement of people in the Western Hemisphere and was the spark that ignited the spectacular growth of the West during the ensuing decades. The gold discovery site, located in the still visible tailrace of Sutter's sawmill, in present day Coloma California, is one of the most significant historic sites in the nation.
It seems true that we have a tendency to not see that which is part of our everyday and thus so many Californians are missing the great offerings of their State. The very Gold Rush you studied, the very Gold Rush all Americans have to study, took place right here. The State Park is one of the most heavily visited in all the United States. The Park is replete with historic items on display, buildings still stand from the era, including a jail cell, a replica of the mill, a few building are still employed that were part of the town during it's boom time, etc.
As always it's a good idea to take measure of your intentions so your trip can go as smoothly as possible. Are you planning a quiet little break for yourself, perhaps just for two? Or, are you in charge of planning an entire family reunion. Fortunately the area can accommodate either option and most in between. There are no motels or hotels in the Coloma valley; however, there are larger towns nearby with chain motels etc.
There are campgrounds in the Coloma/Lotus area: Camp Lotus on Bassi Road, American River Resort on River Road. Perhaps an historic hotel suits your needs better or a bed and breakfast: The Albert Shafsky House in Placerville is a Bed and Breakfast, The Sierra Nevada House is right in Coloma and is an old hotel. Once here, what do you want to do? Are you looking for a day trip, such as wine tasting or rafting?
The Viticulture Society has recognized the lands in South East El Dorado County as some of the best areas for wine production. If you're into wines you must take a wine tour, stop into my favorites Oakstone (just about anything they produce if phenomenal) and Windwalker (specifically the Barbera and Sangiovese!)
Maybe you want more than wine tasting, maybe you want wine tasting AND something else there is so much to do but one of the greatest, most fulfilling options you can chose is whitewater rafting.
Most all the rafting companies have solid reputations and employ professional guides who put safety first. The best advice to picking one that will suit you and your personality, go with the one you feel most comfortable with on the phone and or in email communication.
You really shouldn't pass up the opportunity to raft. The majesty of the river canyon is cathartic in so many ways. Since there are so many things to do in the area, if you do come on a large family outing, there are plenty of things to do for those that absolutely won't raft.
Ever wonder what the oldest hardware store in the west looks like? Or perhaps you're into newspapers and you've long pondered where the home of the oldest western newspaper is. Well, wonder no more, visit historic Hangtown, now known as Placerville. The main street is lined with shops, eateries and real life local businesses.
Want to really mix it up? Make plans to get up early and shoot up US 50 and spend a day in the beautiful South Lake Tahoe basin home to the Lake, hiking, biking, Desolation Wilderness, gaming, shopping, entertainment and the like.
Maybe you have a hot project that just won't allow you to get away for the month-long cruise but you still want to get away, get refreshed, stretch your legs and have a bit of fun. With the Northern California foothills within a day's drive from anyplace in California you can have that vacation. Get online, get organized and get on out to No.Cal!
