Experience Korean Culture In Canada With Toronto’s Koreatowns

Are you interested in Korea? If you happen to live in the Greater Toronto Area, you're in luck. Head over to one of Toronto's two Koreatowns at either Yonge and Finch or Bloor and Christie and you'll get to experience plenty of things Korean.

1. Want to try Korean food for the first time? Or maybe you've had it plenty of times before, but miss some authentic kimchi stew? Head over to the Oh Geul Boh Geul in the North York area. There you'll be served with enough free side dishes to fill you before your meal ever comes out. Also, you'll get quite possibly some of the best Mul Neng Myeon you've ever tasted - even better than what you might have had in Korea.

2. Singing Rooms (No Rae Bangs): If you've been to Korea before, then you more than likely have been to one of the thousands of thousands of private singing rooms. Back in Toronto, you might feel like the public karaoke bars just aren't the same. If you want to sing your heart out, but only in front of your friends, head over to XO at Bloor and Christie for a great No Rae Bang experience.

3. Korean supermarkets offer a wide variety of produce and ingredients that can add a new twist to your regular meals. Add some kimchi as a side dish for dinner. Throw in some rice cakes in your stews. For a snack have a choco pie. You won't regret it! Check out the supermarket at Bloor and Christie and feel free to experiment!

So whether you're Korean and you miss your home country, or Canadian and want to experience a little taste of Korea, Toronto's two Koreatowns have loads to offer to help you get your Korean fix.

Five Great Ideas For A Stay At Home Vacation

Many of us look forward to our vacations so we can relax and enjoy time with the family. In days past, many of us traveled to enjoy our time off, but with the state of the economy, it's so costly that it may not be feasible anymore. Why not consider a staycation instead of going on vacation?

You might actually enjoy the process of renovating your home, preferring to do improvements instead of hiring professionals. Since you've got a week off from work, why not take one room and work on changing it into something bold and new. There are so many options to explore, including painting it a vibrant color with accent trim, shining up light fixtures and fans, and moving furniture around.

Set off on a cultural journey by heading to the museum, local art venues, and your town's library. Get in touch with the history of the area in which you live, and find out the back story of your town or state. For example, New Jersey is called the "Garden State" and Missouri is the "Show me State." Find out why at a bookstore you love, and not only will you get some culture, you'll learn something new as well.

Since you're the one who sets the schedule during your week off, think about having a full day of "you time". Go to the day spa, get a manicure and pedicure, and don't forget the massage. This is a great opportunity to totally revamp your look with a dramatic new hairstyle. Get frivolous by adding highlights and maybe even getting a henna tattoo.

Set a theme to be followed on each night of your week off. 'Picture day" would entail seeing a movie at the theatre, complete with popcorn and candy, then a rented movie for later that night. Before the day is over, get out your digital camera and capture that beautiful sunset. "Animal day" could start off with a visit to the zoo, then a night of watching animal shows on t.v. "Sports day" could be a day of throwing the football around with your kids, then renting "Rudy" to watch later on.

Get outdoors and get active, weather permitting. Hiking is a great way to soak in beautiful scenery while also getting a nice workout. Camping out with friends under the stars can make you feel connected to nature for an old-fashioned and low-tech adventure. See if your group can do it without any of the usual luxuries that have become necessities, such as cell phones, PDAs, and portable games. Try to connect with each other and the wild at the same time.

So don't let a lack of funds stop you from having a great time during your vacation. There's always a way to find interesting and exciting places in your town without spending a fortune. With a little bit of ingenuity and a willing spirit, you can find fun wherever you go, and enjoy a staycation instead.
