Though San Francisco now enjoys the reputation of being an eco-friendly, happy, hippie place to live, it was once the scene of a great amount of violence. It was once the epicenter of a counter culture movement that threatened to topple the United States. It threatened the very fabric of our society and promised a new reality, a new age.
In Oakland, you had the Hell Angels burning up the streets and the Black Panthers lifting their fists in protest. The entire Bay Area was on fire -- literally. Something was in the air and for whatever reasons; nothing was going to satisfy this new youth. Something had to change and it was sure not going to be the revolution.
The promise of a new generation was being carried, one banner at a time, and the television cameras were dispersing them across the nation and across the world. Everything was in flux and it seem like if you were going to be part of anything you had better get to the city and find a room to rent in any of the San Francisco hotels in and near Haight and Ashbury.
If you wanted to be part of something, you had to come. You had to participate and you had to be willing to suffer a hail of baton blows. Even now the SFPD still enjoys a reputation for being rather fascist. What that means, I'm not quite sure, but it has never been beloved by the people. If you were going to be a part of the solution, and not part of the problem, you had to come to San Francisco and prove you merit.
Now, the city is unrecognizable. You'd hardly recognize the area was home to much more than fashion retailers and tie-dye aficionados. Massive swathes of the city have been gentrified and rezoned to accommodate more and more people. Now, you have nearly 900,000 people living on a seven-square mile peninsula. This kind of population density is what prompts comparisons to New York. The only problem is that New York isn't on a fault line.
You can book luxurious hotels in San Francisco for a song.

A town as well as a port, situated on the firth of Clyde, southwest Scotland, Ayr- south Ayshire is the largest settlement in Ayrshire. With a 46,000 population, this county town is an administrative centre for the south Ayrshire council area. Surrounded by adjoining towns like Prestwick (infamous for its golf and aviation industry) and Alloway, known for the county's association with the poet Robert burns, Ayr was one of four Scottish towns competing for the status of a city commemorating the golden jubilee of queen Elizabeth II in 2002. Unfortunately it lost to Stirling.
Since 1197, when a castle was first built by the river Ayr, Ayr has been the centre of many activities. A burgh being created in 1205 by King William the lion and the first parliament of Scotland being held by Robert the Bruce in 1315, Ayr was once commonly known as Invenrair/Invenrayr.
Ayr is a land of rich history, since the time the first castle was built by the riverside of Ayr; a burgh was soon built by King William I of Scotland in 1205. Ayr held the honors to hold the first parliament in Scotland in 1315. In times past, Ayr was once more commonly called Invenrair/Invenrayr and the name still holds in some Scottish dialects.
Being a riverside town very near to the coast, the county of Ayr enjoys very mildewed weather. The close proximity of the sea ensures that winters in Ayr are mild and summers here are cool. Most of the land in the county is flat and low, though the outlying land to the south a bit more elevated than the all the rest of Ayrshire. Due to the flat terrain, there is close to no chance of fog or mist settling in, even snowfall in Ayr is a rare happening.
The industry has slowly flourished through time with only one major setback to the economy. The county has major trade in and out flux because of the local harbor. Through time, the county has pulled its weight through various trades like ship building, coal and copper ore export and even textile industry.
Though in the early years, Ayr's parish church was St John the Baptist, Ayr now has many churches for different denominations. It is served by 15 primary schools and five secondary schools, one in Ayr and four in outlying area serve t educate the young of Ayr. Ayr also has two university campuses.
The slow yet steady improvements have taken their positive effects even on Ayr's beach. Pleasure cruises, sea wall, shelters, lavatory accommodation, bathing and automatic sweat meet machines all add to contribute in making Ayr the prime tourist spot outside Glasgow.

You might be one of the millions of people that heavily rely on the Internet for a constant stream of information. You can find out almost anything there is to know if you take the time to seek it out and find it. Sports scores, recipes, video game and movie reviews, the list goes on and on. A popular choice of sought out information on the web is driving directions, and that's why we are going to discuss the juggernaut of websites offering such directions: Mapquest.
A lot of folks trust the name of Mapquest for many different reasons. You see, the website's commitment to the customer has left a lasting impression on drivers and copilots everywhere. Several websites could give you turn by turn directions, but it takes a company that cares to take it much farther than that. So it's time to learn a few reasons that Mapquest takes the cake.
The first of these more intricate reasons to consider this website is the simple nature of it's use. You see, there are plenty of comparable websites that try to do too much and end up losing those who are not as profound users of the World Wide Web. However, with this site, even users that are new to the Internet can get the directions they need without complication.
You might also be surprised to learn that you do not necessarily need to get directions. The site also features a very detailed map of anywhere in the country that you care to travel to. This will illustrate potential points of interest and landmarks. You will also be able to determine where you might care to travel to, in the vicinity of your final destination. Either way, it could prove to be a pretty interesting feature.
You will also be able to locate the cheapest gas prices in route to your final stop. This could mean saving some money in the long run, and everyone is for saving some money. So if you were to determine which gas locations will offer you the essential fluid for your vehicle at a lower rate than competitors, you will have more money to spend when you get where you're going.
On the website, you can take the locations that you intend to travel to more than once and save the destination in a folder. This is helpful for those who journey between several points a lot. It allows you to easily pull up the information to get you where you want to go without having to fill out the information boxes again.
Because you never know how the roads are going to be. This means that each and every time you search for the directions, you are getting the most logical directions to get there. No one likes getting stuck in hours of road construction that they didn't know about. Even more so, they don't want to assume they are taking the shortest route until they run into a road that no longer exists or isn't in use.
You might think that the best feature of Mapquest is not something that you access, rather something that you appreciate. This is the fact that the site is free to use. That's the best price on the market today. So now that you have this wealth of knowledge for nothing, time to figure out where you want to go.
Many individuals regularly use the internet for driving directions. Perhaps one of these most popular of these websites providing directions is Mapquest. More info on http://www.funandsafedriving.com/mapquest-1.html

There is a lot of merit in hiring a jet charter to travel on business or for personal reasons. When you use a private charter jet you are not restricted to just large airports. With smaller jets you would have many more airports available and can reduce your ground travel time considerably. You can depart closer to home and land closer to your destination with much less hassle. The smaller airports are easier to get to and you can enjoy fast track service for check in and check out. There are no long lines to wait in and security checks are quicker.
To many, charting a private jet may seem like a privilege reserved for the rich and famous. However, while private jets may still be a preferred option for the elite, private jet charter is becoming more accessible. With the increasing cost and inconvenience of standard commercial flights, the perks and benefits of chartering a private jet are all the more noteworthy.
For some, hiring a private jet may seem decadent and simply beyond their means. However, there are many powerful reasons to consider hiring a private jet, which may make many rethink their stance on it.
Catering is available on most private jet charter flights and many offer you the opportunity to access your luggage in flight. Extra personal services are available with jet charters that you would not have offered on a commercial flight. Some jet charter companies offer corporate branding capability so you can add your company logo to the aircraft and to the menus. For corporate convenience some aircraft are equipped with fax machine and other office equipment so you can continue business as usual if you so desire.
More than that, private jet hire often provides more options in terms of destinations. Commercial flights are limited by the carrier's relationship with various airports Private jets, however, have access to any airport. This flexibility not only allows travelers to pick their airport, but can often get travelers closer to their end destination than a typical commercial flight. In the past, private jets were perks for the elite. That does not have to be the case anymore. More and more private jets are available for an affordable rental fee, especially if travelers are flying in larger groups to share the price. With this much to gain and so little to lose, hiring a private jet is no longer a decadent extravagance but a common sense way to save time, frustration, and money.
By hiring a private jet you have the freedom to travel on your own time schedule. Although an nontraditional for of travel private jets charter is the most convenient way to fly. For more information log onto www.privatejetscharter.net

My story: I had a challenge. I needed to move to Mexico for my health and retire, and I spoke English, a few words of French from high school, about 12 words of Spanish which could wind me up in fight or jail, yeah - mostly cuss words.
I was in trouble and when I arrived I needed help. Luckily I met Reuben Varela, a well known Restaurant owner from Lake Chapala, and Gerardo Tolentino, an English teacher from San Juan Cosala.
Reuben pushed me to find ways of learning and practicing Spanish, and Gerardo worked with me to create the Gringo Guide. I'm the gringo -- and I sure needed a guide to get me through the experience of living in Mexico.
We searched the internet, and books on Spanish, and listened to conversations in the English speaking sections of restaurants in Ajijic and San Miguel de Allende where most of the gringos hang out and we figured out what was needed.
We talked to Americans and Canadians in Mexico and asked them what they needed, and we listened to what they asked of the waiters, restaurant owners, etc. Later, then Gerardo accompanied me to doctors and we went to travel through Mexico.
Now, you can speak like native in Spanish speaking countries/Mexico. It's that easy.
Now, everyone I know who visits Mexico, Spanish or anywhere else in Latin America - can speak like a expat that lives in Mexico. It's that easy. The audios cover every unique sound of Spanish speech. The printed book will fit in your shirt pocket for use whenever you want.
The electronic pdf will fit on pocket devices to help you communicate on the spot with electronic support. So, when someone says: Que quieres tomar?
You'll immediately know the answer -- una marguarita, una coca, una limonada, un modelo negro (beer), or whatever you want, por favor! Fulfill all your needs to communicate in Spanish for Spain, Mexico or Latin America?
The book comes with a full guide, by sections to learn, use, and get answers to all your questions. It's guaranteed to make your vacation -- fantastic.
Vacationing in Mexico, South America, Spain, learn the Spanish you need to enjoy your trip like you were born there. Gringo Guide for Speaking Spanishebook digital guide with mp3 to learn sounds. This and other unique content 'vacations' articles are available with free reprint rights.

On a cold, gray morning in late January 2000, the historic Mapes Hotel in Reno was imploded by 75 pounds of explosives tucked into the art-deco structures support columns. The controlled demolition came despite years of effort by a number of groups within the community and nationally to preserve the building with lawsuits, redevelopment proposals, and grass roots lobbying efforts.
While the logic and necessity of demolishing the Mapes is very questionable, one thing that is certain is that the hotel was an important part of Northern Nevada history. The Mapes opened in'47 and with it ushered in a new era for casino gambling and the state of Nevada. Despite some historical revisionism that suggests that the modern era began in Las Vegas with Bugsy Siegel's famed Flamingo, the Mapes was actually the first building in America to have a hotel, casino and live entertainment under the same roof. The Mapes attracted countless celebrities who'd make it their home when business brought them to Northern Nevada--this included movie stars like Clark Gable, TV stars like the cast of 'Bonanza' and political power brokers like infamous anti-Communist crusader Joseph McCarthy.
In the 50s and 60s it became, along with Lake Tahoes Cal-Neva Lodge the place to be seen in Northern Nevada. The top floor, window-walled Sky Room showcased performances by the legends: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Jackie Gleason, Louis Prima, Mae West, Milton Berle, Sammy Davis, Jr., and the Marx Brothers among others. Subsequent years were not kind to downtown Reno but the Mapes continued to do well during the 60's and 70's. The hotel finally closed in'82, due more to financial difficulties experienced by the Mapes family caused by one of their other Northern Nevada gaming properties than anything else.
While the last twenty years brought an amazing boom in the population and economy of Southern Nevada, the Northern part of the state didn't see much of it at all. For that reason, the urgency of destroying the Mapes is even more questionable. In the Las Vegas area, its easy to justify the demolition of older hotels with simple economics--the older properties simply can't compete in the current mega-resort dominated marketplace. Furthermore, the insane valuation of the land on which they sit makes it financially unfeasible to preserve them as pop culture museums.
This is not the case in Reno, where land and buildings for development in virtually every casino area are abundant. The city argued that the land on which the Mapes stood was necessary for their redevelopment efforts--a somewhat absurd position given the realities of downtown Reno and the lack of any real development on the property since the demolition. Despite receiving a number of viable concepts for the Mapes Building, the City Redevelopment Authority rejected all of them and the Mapes was destined for demolition.
The role of the City Redevelopment Authority was questioned throughout the process. Overlooking the Truckee River, the hotel was on a prime location between the downtown casino area and the riverfront district. A number of sound financial proposals were presented that would preserve the integrity of the structure including condominiums, office space, and perhaps most viable, upscale senior apartments. Oddly, all of these proposals were turned down by the citys Redevelopment Agency which continued to maintain that demolition was the only viable option despite copious evidence to the contrary.
Following the 2000 demolition, the lot remained vacant for over a year until a temporary ice skating rink was hastily constructed the following winter. The site now houses a permanent ice skating rink which, while not a bad use for the land, isn't the sort of game changing improvement suggested by the City Redevelopment Agency and their adamant insistence that the building be demolished. To the contrary, it appears they had no specific plan or even general idea of what to do with the land but for some reason wanted to see the hotel come down. This has led to all manner of speculation, ranging from financial self interest to a rumor that the structure was 'haunted' and needed to be destroyed to forestall future paranormal activity in Washoe County. Whatever the reason, the city of Reno lost a valuable landmark that played a significant part in the economic growth of the entire state.

Have you ever gone on holiday with a picture in your mind of just how it will be, and once you get there realising that you had no idea about the destination you are visiting? Organising and booking a holiday these days is quick and easy with the internet. You can find out so much information about popular holiday destinations and also secret hot spots for you to enjoy. There is one thing that should be given more attention than usual, and that is what type of transport should be used once you arrive.
There are a number of factors to consider when comparing the two. First, the amount of people traveling in your group will be an integral factor. Then consider if you are happy to be tied down to schedules and timetables that accompany public transport, or if you would prefer flexibility and convenience that a rental car provides.
The first factor in determining your transportation requirements will be how many people will be traveling. This will help you decide if you are happy to be tied down to a timetable that would be associated with public transport, or if you would prefer the flexibility of hiring a rental car.
The popularity of your holiday destination will determine the prices for both public transport and rental cars. Ensure you have a good understanding of the pricing structure for both to enable a correct comparison. Large groups may find renting a car hire cheaper but forget that they must also pay for parking. Public transport may seem cheaper, but takes out the ability to enjoy hot spots in your own time as you cannot arrive and leave at your own leisure.
Take note to include in your holiday budget any road tolls and other charges that may have to be paid by the driver of the rental car. This is something that is generally overlooked and in some cases can become very expensive. Make sure you understand the pickup and drop off procedures for your rental car as some car hire agents are not located directly at airport terminals and you may need to catch a shuttle bus or taxi to collect the car. This can become very inconvenient. Generally you can book through a national company who will provide you with the convenience of arriving and driving direct from the terminal buildings and they will also have other convenient depots throughout the area you are visiting.
If you decide to use public transport, remember there are only certain routes that you can take. This may not be the most convenient way for you to travel and you may end up taking a number of buses or trains in order to reach your destination. A certain amount of money would also have to be put aside to budget for taxi fares in case you happen to miss a bus or train.
The best way to ensure you enjoy your well earned break is to plan well in advance and book your rental car before you arrive. If you decide that you will utilise public transport, make sure you have a full understanding about the timetables and schedules that you will have to meet.
