As Spring Break ends most of us begin looking towards the next big break from our daily routine. This means summer and summer vacations.

If you cant plan that dream getaway this year, worry not, for there are many fun and mind freeing getaways right here in our own backyards.

Isnt it always so that we forget how incredible the place we live? To remember can remind us not to take for granted those who support and love us; too often, we can take them for granted as well.

From the oldest standing redwood grove, to massive ports of call, to one of the deepest lakes in the world, some of the best rivers to be rafted and surf to be rip-curled, California is as good as it gets and tens of thousands of people flock to its land yearly.

Here are just some of the things you can do in and around the historic county of El Dorado, in Northern California

The American River Valley in Lotus / Coloma is where it all started with the Gold Rush, and so shall we.

El Dorado County is host to the American River Valley and Coloma, it's only 2-hours from the San Francisco Bay Area, 1-hour from South Lake Tahoe and thus has some excellent vacation choices. This is a good choice for a cost friendly break from the daily grind and one that offers a bounty of vacation options. Within a reasonable drive from anywhere in the State, this is a solid option rich in US history as well.

The History:

From the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park website - James W. Marshall discovered gold in 1848 on the South Fork of the American River in the valley the Nisenan Indians knew as Cullumah. This event led to the greatest mass movement of people in the Western Hemisphere and was the spark that ignited the spectacular growth of the West during the ensuing decades. The gold discovery site, located in the still visible tailrace of Sutter's sawmill, in present day Coloma California, is one of the most significant historic sites in the nation.

It seems true that we have a tendency to not see that which is part of our everyday and thus so many Californians are missing the great offerings of their State. Once here, what do you want to do? Are you looking for a day trip, such as wine tasting or rafting?

The Viticulture Society has recognized the lands in South East El Dorado County as some of the best areas for wine production. If you're into wines you must take a wine tour, stop into my favorites Oakstone (just about anything they produce if phenomenal) and Windwalker (specifically the Barbera and Sangiovese!)

Maybe you want more than wine tasting, maybe you want wine tasting AND something else there is so much to do but one of the greatest, most fulfilling options you can chose is whitewater rafting.

Most all the rafting companies have solid reputations and employ professional guides who put safety first. The best advice to picking one that will suit you and your personality, go with the one you feel most comfortable with on the phone and or in email communication.

You really shouldn't pass up the opportunity to raft. The majesty of the river canyon is cathartic in so many ways. Since there are so many things to do in the area, if you do come on a large family outing, there are plenty of things to do for those that absolutely won't raft.

Ever wonder what the oldest hardware store in the west looks like? Or perhaps you're into newspapers and you've long pondered where the home of the oldest western newspaper is. Well, wonder no more, visit historic Hangtown, now known as Placerville. The main street is lined with shops, eateries and real life local businesses.

Want to really mix it up? Make plans to get up early and shoot up US 50 and spend a day in the beautiful South Lake Tahoe basin home to the Lake, hiking, biking, Desolation Wilderness, gaming, shopping, entertainment and the like.

At many state and private parks around the country, it seems like the only way to avoid overly crowded parks, lots of noise, and the long lines to the showers is to camp in the off-season. Here are tips to consider if you don't want crowded camping.

Camp during the week, not on the weekends - many people are weekend campers. Not as many camp during the week. Although campgrounds will be busy in the peak summer months of July and August, it probably won't be filled to capacity during the week. But, even if it is filled to capacity during the week; the beaches, biking trails, hiking trails, etc. won't be as crowded because there won't be the influx of people who come on the weekend to swim, hike, bike, etc.

Camp when school is still in session - if you have kids in school, this tip may not be that helpful, but keep in mind that it's not necessarily the worst thing in the world to take your kids out of school to go on a camping trip, especially if you enrich that trip with learning activities such as going to the nature centers near or in the park; have excursions on the trails; and pick up materials at the park office or nature center that are usually available for free with different learning activities to do while hiking such as identifying trees and plants.

If you home school your children or if they go to a year-round school or modified year round school, there is probably at least one time during the year where it's nice enough to take them camping when most other kids are in school, which will mean less crowded campgrounds.

Camp during slightly off peak times - the campgrounds are much less busy before Memorial Day and after Labor Day. Just make sure you check to see when the park opens and closes for the year and when bathroom facilities are turned off for the season.

For example, at my favorite state park, the bathroom facilities are shut down around the 15th of October every year and aren't turned back on until May 15, but part of the campground stays open year round. The pit toilets are open the entire year but anything with running water is turned off to avoid having pipes burst when the weather gets cold because the buildings aren't heated. This isn't a problem if you have a camper with a bathroom facilities. But if you tent camp or have a popup camper without a bathroom that's another story.
