When I happen to fly into SFO, I don't bother with the hotels proliferating the landscape around the airport and South San Francisco. I throw myself onto the nearest north-bound BART train and jump off at the Powell Street stop and hoof it for two blocks until I get to Union Square. Once there, my bags in tow and feeling a distinct need to shower and shave, I press on, heading north for another block.
Making a left at Sutter Street, I can see it now: the Cartwright Hotel. Though, of course, it is no longer called the Cartwright -- now it's the Larkspur Hotel. Whatever they call it, it's my home away from home, my Union Square hotel par excellence. I breeze in, confirm my reservation, and it's off to the shower. I tend to fly into SFO from Newark, New Jersey, so tend to be pretty tired. A nice shower is followed by a quick call to room service, a delicious Cobb salad, and then a nap.
When I wake up eight hours later, I'm ready to meet the San Francisco morning. A quick shave and I'm out the door. The beauty of staying so close to Union Square is that I'm only minutes from my favorite bakery, Cafe Madeliene, on O'Farrell. A restorative mocha and croissant quickly sets the pace for the rest of my morning, which tends to see me hop the MUNI bus for North Beach.
I tend to spend hours at City Lights Bookstore nestled in North Beach. The book store the Beats built is still home to some of the best literature available in North America. And if you manage to think of it, head upstairs and see some of the original Beat books, poetry and art on display. Don't be intimidated by the attitude -- this is San Francisco, after all.
By this time, I'm famished. This means it's time for lunch at a nearby Italian cafe. While any of the spots on Columbus Avenue are decent enough, they tend to be tourist traps. You'd be better served trying one of the establishments on Vallejo or Mason Streets. Of course, this primes you for an after-lunch cappuccino at the world famous Caffe Trieste. Ah, that's the life! That's San Francisco!
Should you find yourself needing a cozy Union Square hotel, follow me to what used to be the Cartwright.

What do you think when you think of a travel agent? You're probably picturing the words 'middleman,' someone who offers little value in turn for costing a fortune. You can be forgiven for thinking that for sure, because the airline and hotelier industry has spent a fortune on marketing to help reinforce the opinion that buying direct from them is your best option. But travel agents still have a place in today's marketplace - many markets have someone in the middle for a good reason, and the tourism industry is no different. Agents continue to provide an important role, and are still a great option in many cases.
The tourism industry has undergone massive transformation in the digital age, and in some ways the travel agent's role has become misunderstood. While some things are different, many things - including the network of systems and rules that pins together many of the cruise, hotel, and airline systems - is still the same, and a travel agent knows them better than anyone else. You might think it's all simpler now because of the massive investment that travel brands have made to improve their online presence, but there is a lot hiding under the surface. Wouldn't you rather work with someone who has access to special deals, or avoid having to spend the night on the floor of an airport when an extra $15 can get you on an earlier flight?
Connecting with the perfect travel agent can sometimes feel like a needle in a haystack. Almost every agent has a number of professional certifications, so you need to look deeper at things like what's their personality and branding style. You have to find someone you resonate with. Maybe you need to sit face to face with someone, so therefore you'll have to look for someone who is based nearby you - just open up the Yellow Pages and have a look. You might consider someone that is aligned with an event, such as a destination wedding planner for your honeymoon. Whatever it is, be sensitive to your needs.
When you should use a travel agent? Oh the classic question. If you could consider your travel a "once in a lifetime" event, then that's probably a good case for a travel agent. Also if it involves a large party, any more than 4 people, that's also a good candidate. Remember, an agent isn't there just to deal with some travel reservations and booking a car rental for you. They can ensure you have the right visa paperwork, advise if travel insurance is truly necessary, and be there for you in the event of problems or issues in transit. Isn't it night to know you've got someone you can call, god forbid if there's an emergency?
Where are you headed for your next vacation? Regardless of whether you know where it is you want to be or not, you now are clear as to the value and role of a travel agent in today's marketplace and whether one is for you on that next trip.

The Highlands of Scotland were well written about for their wars and betrayals and it is certainly accurate that from the reign of James IV in the 1490's existence in the Highlands was somewhat tumultuous. In 1493, James went against the strong chiefs of the MacDonald Clan and forfeited the MacDonald Lord of the Isles in favour of himself and the Campbell Clan. Therefore the Campbell's took over as powerhouse in that time at the expense of the MacDonalds.
Difficulties arose not simply with the MacDonalds but also with several other Scottish clans because of this unhealthy power divide that the Campbells held over all others. The Campbell were in such a position that they could actually buy up available property and charge a kind of lease upon everyone that wished to utilize the area for cows or sheep. The MacLeans were extremely aggrieved Clan. As a sidenote here, the word Clan originates from the Gaelic word "clann" which actually means "children".
It would seem this can signify any person inside a clan were strongly related however this was not the case. Only the higher echelons of the specific clan were associated with the chiefs. All others simply saw the chief as the leader rather than as a relative as such.
The particular system of clans came from a mixture of early Celtic idealism and feudal ways, the main point being the ownership of lands. The clan chief was the owner of the lands of the clan and he had the capability to grant the land out to his fellow clans men. The status of a clan nonetheless wasn't necessarily about the amount of land that the family owned or operated but more concerning the number of males the clan could possibly muster to be able to fight in war. Because of the Highlands being extremely militaristic they would be looked to for fighting men during the time of conflict between the King and his opponents. For the highland clans this became problematic because they often became embroiled in lowland politics.
When James VI came to be King however, civil war broke out. When he called on the clans to assist the Campbells decided otherwise. It was not just the Campbells who were to cause issues for James - he extirped (sent away) the clan MacGregor in 1603, and in 1609 he introduced new laws in to force which limited all clan chiefs from utilizing and abusing their earlier powers.

Every year, thousands of College students head to exotic island hot spots for spring break. Unfortunately, the recent economic conditions and the rise in the price of tuition have now left many students on a tight budget. Many students cannot afford the usual spring break exotic vacation destinations. Fortunately, there are many things a student can do to plan the perfect spring break vacation while on a budget.
1. When planning a spring break vacation, you should figure out how much you can afford to spend. Once you know how much you can afford, you can plan a vacation that will not have serious financial consequences. You should set the amount of money aside and stick to your budget. Do not take more money than you can afford to spend as you will likely spend it. As well, you should plan how you will spend your money on things like, transportation, food, entertainment, and other expenses. Wherever possible, use cash to buy your items instead of a credit card. You do not want to return from your trip and find yourself saddled with high credit card debt that you cannot afford.
2. Selecting the right vacation destination is a key component to helping you stick with your budget. Decide where you want to go for spring break. If you cannot afford a traditional exotic beach vacation, you should consider a more local destination. Miami and Las Vegas are fun places to vacation. They can also be more affordable destinations. The internet is full of travel sites that offer special spring break packages. Once you have decided on your destination, make sure you book early to ensure you get the best and cheapest deal.
3. Traveling alone or with one person can be expensive. Plan your vacation with a group of friends. You can often get great travel and hotel discounts if you book as a group. If you are traveling by car, travel with a group of friends so that you can share fuel costs. You can also share a hotel room. Having about four people per room will significantly cut down on the cost of accommodations. It can also be really fun staying together.
4. Restaurant costs can really take a bite out of the budget. Instead of dining out every day, get a hotel room that has a kitchenette and buy your food from a supermarket. If you do dine out, look for restaurants where you can get a cheap meal such as a fast food franchise restaurant. By doing so, this will significantly cut down on food expenses.
After calculating how much money you will need and you discover you still cannot afford a vacation, there are many other options to take advantage of such as going on a road trip with friends for a few days, visit family or friends, or take a day trip to another city or fun attraction such as an amusement park. No matter what destination you choose, you should have fun, relax, stay safe, and enjoy the break from your studies.
